        Introduction
Picture of Father Reading to His Daughter

        .

Early Education in America was very primitive and often only the basics were taught: the "3 R's" (reading, writing and arithmetic). Some children learned their lessons at home while others, who were more fortunate, went to one-room schools. Many one-room schools were built during the 19th century to accommodate the growing number of children in an area.

Early learning materials varied and included items such as a hornbook, slate, and slate pencil or piece of chalk. Later, school supplies included a pencil, pencil box, paper, ruler, copybooks, quill pens, ink, and inkwell.

        Chalkboard Only

        .

Product Description: Our wooden, 5-inch by 7-inch schoolroom Chalkboard (1002) comes unpackaged and is suitable for either play or craft projects. It is very much like the slate board used by children in early American schools for practicing writing, arithmetic, and doing homework. If you would rather not pretend you are in a one-room schoolhouse, you can get creative and decorate this chalkboard to use as a hanging sign or reminder board.
