        Introduction
Picture of Boy Playing a Tinwhistle

        .

Perhaps one of man's earliest cultural inventions were crude musical instruments. It is not hard to imagine primitive humans banging two sticks (or animal bones) together in a rhythmic pattern, shaking a dried gourd, or blowing a note on sea shell. Since then, man has evolved -- and so has his musical instruments!

Throughout our history, musical instruments have been a part of our spiritual rituals, social ceremonies, festive events, and personal entertainment. Folk instruments have played an important part in not only developing more sophisticated cultures, but also in defining who and what we are -- as either a society or as an individual. Remembering our past through traditional folk instruments is yet another way to experience our cultural histories and learn about customs that were once important to us.
